Immigration and New Federalism: Updates from VT's State House, Agencies and Towns*
Jill Martin Diaz, Esq. (they/them), Executive Director of Vermont Asylum Assistance Project (VAAP; www.vaapvt.org) will present this 90-minute overview of recent updates to immigration sensitive laws and policies. State and local lawmaking is playing an increasingly important role in shaping the lives of noncitizens while congressionally legislated reform stalls in an intractable political stalemate. This session will review and reinforce immigration 101 topics before surveying immigration-related laws and policies that impact noncitizen Vermonters’ everyday lives. We’ll exchange updates from this legislative session, consider how Vermont's efforts compare with other states, preview other efforts for future sessions, and review town and municipality-based law and policymaking. The session will culminate with collective brainstorming, hypothetical review, and Q&A.
