Public Charge Info

WHAT IS A PUBLIC CHARGE? WHAT DOES IT MEAN?

A Public Charge is a designation by the government that depends on your status. This designation means that the government believes you have potential to be dependent on the government for assistance either now, or in the future. Becoming a Public Charge is often used against immigrants in the argument of removing them from the United States.

WHY DOES BEING A PUBLIC CHARGE MATTER?

Public Charge status can seriously impact the likelihood of receiving a green card or a visa to allow you to stay in the United States. With that said, becoming a public charge does allow you to receive government assistance in housing, food, and health insurance.

WHAT DOES BEING A PUBLIC CHARGE LOOK LIKE?

Becoming a Public Charge very much depends on your intended status. Those who are looking to support their family can allow them to receive government benefits and still be considered a non-Public Charge. Most immigrants are subject to the Public Charge rule but some are exempt. Most notably, this includes both asylees and refugees.
