VAAP goes to Washington
Immigration is top-of-mind for many voters as election season approaches. However, much of what is needed to create a fair and just immigration system must come from Congress.
For the American Immigration Lawyers Association’s National Day of Action 2024, Jill Martin Diaz of Vermont Asylum Assistance Project (VAAP) is in Washington, D.C. with Vermont Bar Association representatives — including the wonderful Vermont Law and Graduate School Poverty Law Fellow, Maya Tsukazaki — advocating with hundreds of other American Immigration Lawyers Association members for lawmakers to advance bipartisan solutions that address the needs that my colleagues and I see each day in our practices and communities, including:
—> Adequately funding U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, the Department of Labor, and U.S State Department to reduce backlogs and delays.
—>Expanded legal pathways to alleviate pressure at the border.
—>Congress-provided legal pathways to permanent status.
Visit aila.org/NDA to read more about the recommendations I, along with other AILA members, will be making to lawmakers. Huge thanks to Vermont’s Congressional Delegation for your time meeting with us and for all your work in Congress for a more fair, functioning, and just immigration system for all.
